The Stokes Bay Lines

The Stokes Bay Lines, constructed to protect Gosport from a beach landing at Stokes Bay, consisted of a ditch that ran from the Browndown Batteries in the west to Fort Monckton in the east. The River Alver was diverted into the moat to ensure that there was always sufficient water and in 1950, the ditch was filled because of complaints from residents of mosquitoes and stagnant water.
