Invasions
Eighty years apart and Stokes Bay was the scene of preparation for invasions. Firstly, the Stokes Bay Lines were constructed from 1859 to protect Gosport from a beach landing at Stokes Bay, the perecived invader being the French. Then, in 1944, Stokes Bay was again involved with invasions, this time the construcion of the Phoenix caissons to form part of the Mulberry Harbours and the D-Day invasion of Normandy
